On October 6, 2026, Google released Nano Banana 2.1, the new version of its image model, the one that made image generation take off in Gemini. Eight months after Nano Banana 2, the update promises more natural images, more precise editing, more consistent characters and, above all, an image that costs half as much.
We read the documentation and the model card Google published and compared the prices line by line. Here's what really changes, the limits to know about and how it stacks up against GPT Image 2.5. And good news: Nano Banana 2.1 is already available in CreaFlow AI, for your static creatives and your videos alike. We'll show you what that changes at the end.
Nano Banana 2.1 at a glance
- Release: October 6, 2026, straight to a stable version, with no preview period.
- Maker: Google DeepMind. The model belongs to the Gemini 3 family and is built on Gemini 3.6 Flash.
- API ID:
gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Google lists it as the replacement for Nano Banana 2 (gemini-3.1-flash-image). - Price: $0.0336 per image at 1K, versus $0.067 for Nano Banana 2.
- Where to use it: the Gemini app, AI Mode in Google Search, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Google Flow, Stitch, Google Ads and Gemini Enterprise.
What's new in Nano Banana 2.1
Google sums up the update in three areas: better visual design, mask-based editing and subject consistency. Here's what changes in detail.
More natural, better composed images
The first gain is obvious at a glance: images look less "generated". More balanced lighting, better depth, more polished compositions. Complex prompts, with several elements and several constraints, are also followed more closely. Text rendering improves too: headlines, signs, labels and infographics come out sharper than with version 2.
Targeted editing (mask-based editing)
This is the most useful new feature day to day. You can change a single area of an image without touching the rest: change the colour of a garment, replace an object, redo a background. No need to cut anything out: you describe in words what should change, and the model leaves the rest intact. In Google's tests, it's one of the areas that improves the most.
Characters and products that stay the same
The long-standing flaw of image generation is drift: from one image to the next, the face changes, the logo warps, the bottle takes another shape. Nano Banana 2.1 does a better job of keeping the appearance of a character or an object from one edit to the next and across a series of related images. For a brand, that's what finally makes it possible to iterate on a scene without losing the product along the way.
More references and wider formats
- Up to 14 reference images in a single request, including around ten objects and several characters.
- Three resolutions: 1K (default), 2K and 4K. Nano Banana 2's small 512 px size is gone.
- Panoramic formats: Google fixed the visible seams on extreme formats, up to 8:1, useful for banners and very wide visuals.
Adjustable thinking and Google Search
Before drawing, the model can "think" about the scene. This level can be set to minimal, medium or high, and now defaults to medium (Nano Banana 2 started at minimal). The model can also rely on Google Search, web and images, to accurately depict a place, a landmark or a real object. One exception: it doesn't draw on real photos of people.
Nano Banana 2.1 pricing: half the cost
This is the argument that will win over most developers. Through the Gemini API, the price of an image drops by half at 1K and 2K:
| Price per image (Gemini API) | 1K | 2K | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2.1 | $0.0336 | $0.0504 | $0.113 |
| Nano Banana 2 | $0.067 | $0.101 | $0.151 |
| Nano Banana Pro | $0.134 | $0.134 | $0.24 |
Two nuances the announcements leave out:
- At 4K, the drop is only a quarter, not half.
- What you send to the model costs three times more than with Nano Banana 2: $1.50 per million input tokens, versus $0.50. The more reference images you send, the more the savings shrink. It's still more than five times cheaper than OpenAI, which charges $8 per million tokens for GPT Image 2.5's input images.
Batch mode (images delivered within 24 hours) halves all these prices again.
Where to use Nano Banana 2.1, free or paid
- For free: in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Google Search, with a daily quota that depends on your Google plan.
- To create and experiment: Google AI Studio, Google Flow (Google's video tool) and Stitch.
- For advertising: directly in Google Ads, or in CreaFlow AI to produce your Facebook and Instagram ads.
- For developers: the Gemini API and Gemini Enterprise. No free tier on the API side: every image is billed.
What the benchmarks say
In the tests Google published, Nano Banana 2.1 scores 1,050 Elo points on overall preference in image generation, versus 990 for Nano Banana 2 and 935 for Nano Banana Pro. On infographic factuality, it goes from 0.179 to 0.521: almost three times better.
In the public votes on Arena, it goes straight into the top 5 and becomes Google's best image model, well ahead of Nano Banana Pro. OpenAI's models still lead the votes, but Nano Banana 2.1 is unbeatable on the balance of quality, speed and price.
Limits to know about
Google's model card lists the weak spots itself:
- Small text can come out blurry. A legal notice, an ingredient list or a label seen from afar need a second look.
- Character consistency is better, but not perfect.
- Left and right sometimes get mixed up in placement instructions.
- Every image carries an invisible SynthID watermark, which marks it as AI-generated.
How to get the most out of Nano Banana 2.1
If you use it directly in Gemini or AI Studio, a few habits make a real difference:
- Describe the scene, not a list of keywords. The model understands sentences: who, where, what light, what framing.
- For an edit, say what should stay. For example: "In this image, replace only the background with a bright kitchen. Keep everything else exactly the same."
- Give your real photos as references for a product or a character, rather than describing it.
- Keep text to short, readable headlines. Add longer copy afterwards in an editor.
- Check everything before it goes live: a typo in an ad costs more than a redone image.
Nano Banana 2.1 or GPT Image 2.5: which one to choose?
It's the question everyone has been asking since launch. For producing ads, Nano Banana 2.1 wins on what matters most: faster, more photographic, cheaper as soon as you send your product photos, and able to go up to 4K. GPT Image 2.5 still leads the public votes and is slightly more reliable on small text. We broke the match down criterion by criterion in our Nano Banana 2.1 vs GPT Image 2.5 comparison.
